Plastic and metal material selection for industrial manufacturing

Materials for Plastic, Metal, Tooling and Assembly Projects

Compare material families by end use, manufacturing process, geometry, finish, environment and validation responsibility before a grade is locked into drawings or tooling.

Direct Answer

How should an OEM select a manufacturing material?

Start with product use and failure risk, then compare environment, load, temperature, chemicals, appearance, process, quantity, compliance and supply continuity. A material name such as ABS, PC, HDPE or aluminum is only a family; the production grade, supplier, additives, color and validation method determine whether the selection is suitable.

Material by Process

Shortlist materials through the manufacturing route.

The table is a selection framework, not a universal approval. Final material and grade decisions require product data and buyer-defined validation.

Material Families

Plastic, metal and tooling materials Pauline can evaluate and source.

Use these summaries to prepare an RFQ. Technical data sheets, supplier declarations and samples remain necessary where performance or compliance matters.

ABS

Injection molding, overmolding and assembled housings

Balanced stiffness, impact and cosmetic performance for indoor equipment housings, appliance parts and control products. Outdoor use requires grade-specific UV and weathering review.

Finish / decoration
Mold texture, paint, plating, printing and laser marking depend on grade and surface design.

PP

Injection molding, living hinges, fluid and packaging products

Low density and chemical resistance make PP useful for caps, fluid-handling parts, covers and selected industrial products. Creep, temperature and dimensional stability must be checked.

Finish / decoration
Molded color, texture, printing and selected treatments; bonding and painting need process validation.

PC

Transparent or impact-resistant molded components

High impact strength and heat capability can suit protective covers, viewing parts and equipment housings. Stress cracking, UV, flame rating and chemical exposure depend on the exact grade.

Finish / decoration
Polish, texture, coating, printing and hard-coat routes require optical and stress review.

PA / Nylon

Structural injection-molded parts, gears, brackets and inserts

PA6, PA66 and reinforced grades can provide strength and wear performance. Moisture absorption changes dimensions and properties, so conditioning and tolerance assumptions matter.

Finish / decoration
Molded texture, color and selected coatings; fiber orientation and visible surface quality require DFM.

POM / Acetal

Precision mechanisms, gears, clips, bushings and fluid-control parts

Low friction and good dimensional behavior make POM useful for moving or precision components. Bonding, painting and certain chemical or high-temperature conditions need care.

Finish / decoration
Usually used as molded; marking or specialized surface operations require grade and process checks.

HDPE / LLDPE

Rotational molding, blow molding, tanks and durable hollow products

Impact, chemical resistance and large hollow-part capability support tanks, cleaning equipment and outdoor components. Stiffness, wall distribution, UV and creep must be validated for the application.

Finish / decoration
Molded color and texture are common; printing, labeling and bonding need suitable surface preparation.

PMMA / Acrylic

Transparent covers, displays and cosmetic product components

Optical clarity and surface appearance are strengths, while impact, solvent exposure and assembly stress require review. PC may be a better direction where impact dominates.

Finish / decoration
Polish, color, printing, coating and optical surface control can be specified by approved samples.

Aluminum

CNC machining, sheet metal, extrusion, die casting and hybrid assemblies

Low weight, machinability and corrosion behavior support enclosures, heat-transfer parts, brackets and frames. Alloy, temper, wall, tolerance and joining route must match the process.

Finish / decoration
Anodizing, powder coating, painting, bead blasting, brushing and conversion coating.

Stainless Steel

Machined, stamped, formed and welded industrial components

Corrosion resistance and durability support fluid, outdoor and service-intensive products. Grade, forming, welding, passivation, finish direction and cost should be defined early.

Finish / decoration
Passivation, electropolishing, brushing, polishing, blasting and project-specific marking.

Carbon / Coated Steel

Sheet metal cabinets, frames, brackets and stamping

Cost-effective strength suits cabinets, chassis and structural parts. Corrosion protection, weld distortion, flatness, edge condition and coating allowance are key controls.

Finish / decoration
Powder coating, e-coat, zinc plating, paint, black oxide and other specified systems.

Zinc and Aluminum Casting Alloys

Die-cast housings, covers and structural components

Casting can combine geometry, stiffness and production efficiency at volume. Draft, wall transitions, porosity-sensitive areas, machining datums and finish expectations must be included in DFM.

Finish / decoration
Shot blast, vibratory finish, powder coating, plating, painting and machining.

Tool Steels

Injection molds, rotational molds, stamping dies and production tooling

Steel selection depends on tool life, resin, corrosion, polish, texture, repair, heat treatment and maintenance. A named steel alone does not define the complete tool specification.

Finish / decoration
Heat treatment, nitriding, polish, texture, coating and corrosion protection by tool requirement.

Material Selection Route

Six checks before material approval.

  1. 01Define use

Environment, duty cycle, contact materials, target life and failure consequences.

  2. 02Define geometry

Wall, ribs, bosses, threads, sealing faces, loads and mating components.

  3. 03Select process

Volume, size, tolerance, appearance, investment and design maturity.

  4. 04Shortlist grades

Supplier data, availability, additives, color and processing requirements.

  5. 05Prototype and sample

Choose evidence that answers fit, appearance, process and function questions.

  6. 06Approve and control

Record grade, supplier, alternative policy, sample, inspection and change route.
